Everyone complains about how high their electricity bill is but did you know there is a relatively easy way many people can reduce it significantly? You may be paying a much higher rate than you need to if you have not checked your price per Kilowatt hour on your monthly statement. On every bill your electrical provider is required to state the effective price per KWH that you are paying. If you are not locked into a rate, your provider can raise your rates any time they choose. Even if you are locked in you may be paying so much over current rates that it makes financial sense to pay the penalty to break the contract.An example of common savings might be someone who is paying 15 cents per KWH and they can get a rate for 10 cents per KWH if they switch providers. Based on a modest sized home averaging 1000 KWH per month, you can save $50 per month or $600.00 per year by switching to a lower rate. Even if you have a plan locked in with a $100.00 cancelation penalty you would save $500.00. The savings get much larger for homes with all electric heat and appliances. It is not uncommon for these mid-sized homes to use 2000 to 3000 KWH during some months. If you have one of these type homes you could be paying as much as $150.00 per month too much!

So take a few minutes with your electricity bill and do the math. Then get on the website provided by the state of Texas that lists all the providers and their rates: www.powertochoose.org. Click on the link that says, “Go Directly to Offers”, pick a rate and contract length that you are comfortable with, and start saving today!

PS: If the energy provider is advertising heavily on radio and television, they are probably NOT the cheapest provider. Furthermore, the electricity all comes from the same places and you are guaranteed the same service on all of them.
